League of Legends

November 29, 2009

Lately, I’ve been sinking some time in League of Legends (also known as “LoL”). Made by Los Angeles-based Riot Games, it’s an official spin-off to the popular Warcraft 3 Mod: Defense of the Ancients (or “DotA”). The great thing about LoL is the price tag: completely free. You simply download the game and start playing.  No fee required (well, almost)!

A typical match in LoL will have you playing with 4 other players against an opposing team of 5 in an arena. Before starting, you select one Champion character, a powerful hero with diverse skills that will act as your avatar during matches. When a game starts, the ultimate aim is to destroy the opponents “Nexus” in their base to win. Standing in the way of your triumph stands groups of minions (computer-controlled canon fodder that follow a set path), hurtful turrets and of course, the opposing players. Every players Champion starts at level 1. As matches progress, players need to kill minions or opposing players to gain experience to increase levels and individual skills and earn gold to invest in stat-boosting items.

The icing on the cake: there are over 40 champions available to play and none have the same exact skills, play style or statistics. Plus, add that different equipment combinations, synergy/teamwork between champions and you’ve got one of the deepest meta-games I’ve ever seen. It’s quite staggering and I’ve never played a match that ended quite in the same fashion. I’ve discovered that individual skill and thoughtful strategies impact immensely the outcome of matches, leaving room for beginners to learn the ropes while more experienced players take the lead.

But, I wouldn’t say my experience so far as been all positive. For example: a normal match will typically last 45 minutes to an hour, which I feel may be a bit too long. Player death in LoL is also very punishing since respawn times increases with higher levels and give an immense experience and gold boost to the player who managed to score the kill. Quick successive deaths give the opposing team a strong lead and it’s almost futile to fight back to anyone but skilled players. Probably the most difficult thing to accept is the insanely steep learning curve. Before starting to contribute in match, make no mistakes: you will die, a lot. I know I did.

After the ends of matches, every player earns currency  called Influence Points. IP is how you unlock content in LoL. With IP you can permanently unlock new champions , skins and glyphs that augment specific statistics for any champion you decide to select for match. Or if you want, you can decide to spend money that directly translate into Riot Points to allow yourself to purchase things quicker. Be sure, if you’re so inclined you can play all you want, earn stuff at an acceptable rate and never spend a damn dime. It’s a neat system and for the most part it works.

League of Legends is wrapped in an aesthetically pleasing game that should be able to run on just about any machine. Its art direction takes inspiration directly from cartoon fantasy like Warcraft. Textures and effects are bright and colourful. Nothing groundbreaking, but it works very nicely.
